BODMAS: The Order of Operations

BODMAS is an acronym used to remember the order of operations in mathematics. It stands for:

  • Brackets
  • Orders (powers or roots)
  • Division
  • Multiplication
  • Addition
  • Subtraction

How to use BODMAS:

  1. Brackets: Solve any expressions inside brackets first.
  2. Orders: Calculate powers or roots.
  3. Division and Multiplication: Perform division and multiplication in the order they appear from left to right.
  4. Addition and Subtraction: Perform addition and subtraction in the order they appear from left to right.

Example:

Calculate: 2 + 3 × 4

  • Multiplication comes before addition according to BODMAS.
  • So, 3 × 4 = 12
  • Then, 2 + 12 = 14

Therefore, 2 + 3 × 4 = 14
