BODMAS: The Order of Operations
BODMAS is an acronym used to remember the order of operations in mathematics. It stands for:
- Brackets
- Orders (powers or roots)
- Division
- Multiplication
- Addition
- Subtraction
How to use BODMAS:
- Brackets: Solve any expressions inside brackets first.
- Orders: Calculate powers or roots.
- Division and Multiplication: Perform division and multiplication in the order they appear from left to right.
- Addition and Subtraction: Perform addition and subtraction in the order they appear from left to right.
Example:
Calculate: 2 + 3 × 4
- Multiplication comes before addition according to BODMAS.
- So, 3 × 4 = 12
- Then, 2 + 12 = 14
Therefore, 2 + 3 × 4 = 14
